Petition: Call to Ban Firecrackers in Sri Lanka

Call to Ban Firecrackers That Are Being Used to Kill Elephants, Dogs and Other Animals in Sri Lanka

To the Government of Sri Lanka,

In your country, countless animals - ranging from stray cats to wild elephants - are routinely being fed food containing concealed firecrackers.

The aim of the firecrackers (known locally as "Hakka Patas" or "Jaw Bombs") is to cause serious, often unrecoverable, injury to the animal's mouth.

In turn, this heinous act usually results in agonsing pain, starvation and death for the animal.

In one such instance, a pineapple was laced with Hakka Patas and given to an elephant. The result was an agonising death that lasted for hours.

Countless cats, dogs, elephants and other wildlife are continuing to suffer the same fate in your country.

Very few animals are able to survive the horrific injuries caused by Hakka Patas. And, for the few that do, they can never eat normal food again. All their food must be liquidised as their lower jaw hangs broken, with them being unable to ever close their mouth again.

With little deterent, perpetrators of this dreadful crime receive only a paltry fine. We therefore request a far harsher punishment, including custodial sentencing, for anyone found guilty of inflicting such inhumane suffering.

Hakka Patas are also being used to frighten stray cats, dogs and wildlife. The Hakka Patas are generally thrown directly at the animal, many receiving injuries and all left severely traumatised.

IN ORDER TO BRING A SWIFT END TO THESE BARBARIC ACTS, WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, CALL FOR:

  • A COMPLETE BAN OF THE SALE OF HAKKA PATAS IN SRI LANKA.
  • CUSTODIAL SENTENCING FOR ANYONE FOUND GUILTY OF USING HAKKA PATAS TO KILL OR HARM AN ANIMAL.

Signed,
