The Problems for Cats and Dogs in Sri Lanka

  • There are at least three million stray dogs in Sri Lanka and millions of stray cats.
  • The overpopulation of strays in Sri Lanka has been a problem for so long that the majority of people view them as pests/vermin as they are afraid of catching diseases from them.
  • The few locals who do care for the strays are treated with hostility and receive threats from the rest of the community.
  • There is a lack of food and water available for the strays.
  • They rarely have a safe location to live. With the roads in Sri Lanka being so dangerous (even for people), a large percentage of pups are killed on the roads and many adults become paralysed.
  • Diseases like cat flu, parvovirus, distemper and TVT cancer are rife in the stray population.
  • Seldom few of stray cats and dogs in Sri Lanka are currently spayed/neutered, thereby exacerbating all these problems.
Our Mission Statement
• To relieve the suffering of the strays through rabies vaccinations, food and treatment of injuries.
• To reduce the overpopulation of the stray dogs and cats in Sri Lanka.
• To re-open the mass spay clinic in Wennapuwa.
• To lobby the Government of Sri Lanka to sufficiently address what is happened to its stray and wild animals.

Our Work

The majority of our work focuses on providing direct care to the stray animals of Sri Lanka.

This ranges from looking after sick and injured animals, feeding stray animals and getting veterinary treatment.

Prevention is also a big part of what we do but, due to a shortage of funds, we were forced to close our mass spay clinic in 2023. However, we are intending to re-open that clinic in 2024.

We are also launching petitions to spread awareness of the plight of the stray animals in Sri Lanka and thereby create pressure for the Government of Sri Lanka to take appropriate action in looking after its animals.
